Process
1. Cooking
The process begins with cooking the raw materials, which can include whole fish or fish by-products. The material is cooked at a temperature of 94°C for 20 minutes using indirect steam. This step is crucial as it stops microbiological and enzymatic activity in the product and helps to separate the oil from the solid components.
2. Pressing
After cooking, the material is pressed using a mechanical press, typically a twin-screw press. This process separates the material into two phases: the liquid (stick water contains water and oil) and the solid (press cake). The press cake is then sent for further processing, while the liquid phase is directed to the separation process.
3. Drying
The press cake, which still contains some moisture, is dried in a steam dryer. The drying process reduces the moisture content of the fishmeal to around 5-10%, ensuring the final product is stable and safe for storage. This step is critical for preventing bacterial growth and reducing chemical reactions.
4. Screening
The dried fishmeal is then screened to remove any large particles. Ensuring the final product is uniform in texture and free from contaminants. Screening is an important step to maintain the quality and consistency of the fishmeal.
5. Grinding
After screening, the fishmeal is ground into a fine powder using a grinder. This step ensures that the fishmeal particles are uniform in size, which improves solubility and digestibility. Grinding also helps to increase the surface area of the fishmeal, enhancing its nutritional value.
6. Cooling
The ground fishmeal is then cooled to reduce its temperature before packaging. Cooling helps to preserve the nutritional quality of the fishmeal and prevents any potential degradation due to heat.
7. Packing
Finally, the cooled fishmeal is packaged in bags or containers for distribution. Additives such as antioxidants may be added to the fishmeal to prevent oxidation and maintain its quality during storage and transportation
